3 Easy-Step Guidance to Properly Using Luo Pan
For non-practitioners, Luo Pan is a fascinating tool and always quite successful in rising curiosity since it’s existence in nowadays modern civilization. And for beginner in Feng Shui, using Luo Pan properly is another skill they’ve yet to master.

Luo Pan at a glance
As a Chinese character, Luo means everything and Pan means tool. As a conclusion, Luo Pan is a tool that contains lots of information. Luo Pan in short is a compass. This compass is different with ‘normal’ Western compass. In Chinese, compass means a south pointing needle. This needle is what makes Luo Pan a special compass compared to ‘normal’ compass.
Back to its core meaning, Luo Pan contains many informations (formulas) regarding its functions. Each company whom producing Luo Pan could arrange and put different formula according their ‘style’ or favourite formulas.

Rule №1 Never drop or put Luo Pan on the floor!
You should always hold -firmly- Luo Pan whenever you use it. There are some things that we must understand before even star using Luo Pan. This one thing is the most important of all.
Step №1 Hold Luo Pan Close to Your Body.
Standing firm and balance while holding Luo Pan. Keep Luo Pan level by checking the leveler part. It is located on the corner. Keep the bubbles to remain in the middle of the two lines horizontally and vertically. Keep the bubbles within the borders.
Hold Luo Pan close to your body, somewhere around the waist (or navel) area. Imagine yourself being an anchor and main point while taking measurement.
Step №2 Adjusting the Metal Plate.
Luo Pan consists of two main part, the square wooden pan and the rotating metal plate. In the heart of the metal plate, there lies the compass part. Wait until the needle stops moving and adjust the line on the compass and rotate the metal plate to meet the needle until they align perfectly.
While rotating the metal plate, make sure you don’t touch both strings ‘guarding’ the plate. These strings will help you to determine the main 4 directions of the measurement that you took. The strings are being positioned exactly perpendicularly to each other. Once you took the facing direction degree, instantly you also knew the other main 3 directions. The back, the right side, and the left side.
Step №3 Reading the Directions.
The 2 strings that are ‘guarding’ the Luo Pan will help you to determine the degree of the directions. Check carefully if the string shows clear degree. If the directions fall between 2 degrees (for example: 312’ and 313’) and you are not sure which is the corect direction, check the alignment of the line and the needle again. Check and recheck again.
For beginners, chances are since you are not used to using Luo Pan, there could be a miss regarding the alignment. It goes down to practice-practice and practice.
