In the Eight Mansions system, there are two main things that we need to focus on. First, the personal Life Gua which will be the main ingredient to determine ones favourable and unfavourable directions. Secondly, understanding the favourable and unfavourable directions for further usages.

1. Life Gua

Using your date of birth, we can determine your personal Life Gua number. If being born before the year 2000, the formula is as simple as [10]-X for guys and [5]+X for ladies. If being born after the year 2000, the formula becomes [9]-X for guys and [6]+X for ladies. X is the base number that we are looking for base on the date of birth (year of birth) calculation.

Before February 4th of each year, it still considered as the previous year. Therefore, date of birth 2 February 1975, the year is considered 1974. If the date of birth is 15 February 1987, the year is considered 1987.

Example 1: a lady was born 15 March 1967. The year of birth is 1967. Take out the last two number of the year, [6] and [7]. Sum the two numbers until you get one last number. [6]+[7]=[13] — [1]+[3]=[4]. Therefore, X is [4]. Since this is a lady, the formula is [5]+X, [5]+[4]=[9]. Voila, this lady Life Gua is 9, Li Gua.

Example 2: a guy was born 21 January 2009. The year of birth is 2008. Take out the last two number of the year, [0] and [8]. Sum the two numbers until you get one last number. [0]+[8]=[8]. Therefore, X is [8]. Since this is a guy, the formula is [10]-X, [10]-[8]=[2]. This guy Life Gua is 2, Kun Gua.

If happen to sum the numbers and get 2-digit numbers, you should add it up until you get the one last number. For example, [12], it is consist of [1] and [2]. Therefore, it’s [1]+[2]=[3].

There is no Gua #5. Life Gua #5 is translated into Gua #2 for a guy and Gua #8 for a lady.

2. East Group and West Group

Which group do you belong to? Based on the personal Life Gua, each person belongs to either East Group or West Group.

Life Gua #1, #3, #4 and #9 is part of the East Group.

Life Gua #2, #6, #7, #8 is part of the West Group.

Knowing which group you belong to means that if you meet someone that is belong to the same group, doing certain activity like brainstorming or connecting with people will be a lot easier rather than meeting people from different group as you. It is simply because you see things from different perspective or side.

Since you already know your personal Life Gua, and therefore you could derive your own personal favourable and unfavourable sector in your house, you could try using the sector according to your needs. For example, when in need of inspiration, you can use Sheng Qi sector or direction. If you want to have a stable condition and focus on doing your work, then choose Fu Wei sector and direction.

The main idea is to align our intention (what you want to do) with the certain energy which mingles in certain sector of the house.
