The Ultimate Guide to Plot Property’s Flying Star Chart
A skill that any practitioner of Feng Shui know and enthusiast will find useful to master. Dedicated for you who are interested in plotting a property’s Flying Star chart.
While these days technology help us answer most of our questions, plotting a Flying Star chart manually becomes a skill that every single Feng Shui practitioner know by heart. Practitioners fly the star almost in every single case and by understanding the pattern, they predict the outcome and decide the next step based on it.
Therefore, I genuinely encourage people who are interested in diving deep into the art, should master of how to fly the stars.
There are 2 main components we need before plotting the chart. The facing of the property and the move in period. After we know these main 2 components, then we can start plotting the chart.
1. Determine The Facing of the Property.
Let’s settle this one matter once and for all, the facing of the property is not the same with the main door facing.
Finding out the property’s facing is a huge matter and topic. It almost as if they need a dedicated article talking only about it. To read a full explanation about determining property’s facing, you can read it here.
Example №1. We can see from the property above, it was clearly being designed and built to face a certain direction. Also, the main door was attached to one side of the property. In this case, we know that the facing of the property may be the same with the door facing. But of course, we pay attention to the property’s face.
Example №2. A rather different from the previous one, no? Generally speaking, most properties are being built to face the road, just like this house. Therefore, particularly for this house, the facing is where the side attach to the main road. On the other hand, the main door location and direction is different from the property’s facing. For now, ignore the main door direction and put focus on the property’s facing instead.
Still confused? No problem! Learn more in this article here.
2. Take Measurement of Property’s Facing.
Next step is to take measurement of the property’s face direction. Here we go!
We measure the exact direction using Luo Pan, a Feng Shui compass. If you don’t have Luo Pan (which I suggest that you do, if you are going to take this professionally), use a good quality compass to take the measurement. I explain more on how to use Luo Pan properly here.
Quick reference. Stand somewhere in the middle of the front part (could be porch or terrace) of the property. Open your Luo Pan and hold it properly. The position should be level and hold it close to your body (somewhere around the waist area). Then adjust your Luo Pan according the needle direction (wait until it stops) and voila you get the direction.
Take note of the property’s facing for now (also with the direction degree).
The 24 Mountains
From the main eight directions (N, NE, E, SE, S, SW, W and NW) they are further divided into 3 sub-directions. In total, there are 24 directions and in Feng Shui we call them the 24 Mountains. A compass is 360' which then divided into 8 directions, hence 45' each. For each directions divided into 3 sectors (sub-directions), hence 15' each.
From the previous measurement that you already have, now we want to find out which sector area we considered in. For example, the property is facing North. Which North? North sector 1, North sector 2 or 3? This sector later on will define whether the stars will fly Yang or Yin.
Take the measurement from before and check in the table below, which sector are you. After you find out, keep the it the information for now.
3. Determine the Move In Period.
Or known as age of the building. Before we actually fly the stars, first we need to determine when the property gained its life. It is by knowing when is the owner moving in, not based on when the completion of the building construction.
Refer to the chart above, currently we are in the Period 8 (2004–2023). If the owner move in the property within this period, it means the property belongs to the 8th Period. How about if the owner move in to the property in 1975? Correct! The property belongs to Period 6.
In some countries, where some historical houses are let, it might be a little bit difficult to track down, when exactly the owner moved in. For this, you should do your own research, call the shots and determine the Period.
Determine the facing, check. Take measurement of the facing, check. Determine the property’s period, check. Now we are down to the even more technical stuff. The Luo Shu path and understanding Base Star-Facing Star-Sitting Star.
4. Luo Shu.
Luo Shu diagram is the understanding of ancient Feng Shui Masters about Qi patterns move over time. The Luo Shu pattern (path) always -always- start from the center and move with the same pattern.
Luo Shu Path
Start from CENTRE — NW — W — NE — S — N — SW — E — SE.
There are two manners of how the stars move. It is either Yang or Yin. Yang Path is when the numbers (stars) move in an increasing manner. If start with #7, it will be followed by #8, #9, #1, #2 and so on.
When the stars are following the Yin Path, the numbers (stars) move in in decreasing manner. If start with #2, it will be followed by #1, #9, #8 and so on.
Whether the stars travel Yang or Yin, the stars will always following the Luo Shu Path.
Determine the stars fly Yang or Yin
Later on when we start to fly the stars, we will need this table to determine whether the stars will fly Yang or Yin.
Odd Gua consists of Gua 1, 3, 7, 9 and Even Gua consists of Gua 2, 4, 6, 8. Gua 5 is different. During the Odd ‘Period’ Years is +, -, -. While during Even ‘Period’ Years is -, +, +.
5. Understanding Base Star — Facing Star — Sitting Star.
A complete Flying Stars chart should look like this. The middle number represents the Base Star, the right number represents the Facing Star (Water Star), and the left number represents the Sitting Star (Mountain Star).
The complete Flying Star chart above belongs to a property in Period 8, facing NW 303' which is part of Sector 1. Therefore Odd stars fly Yang, Even stars fly Yin. Since both of the Facing and Sitting stars are Odd stars, both are flying Yang.
Don’t forget the Luo Shu Path! It’s easier to put South on top of the box and North on the bottom. Then fly the stars accordingly. If the facing is not South, then after flying the stars, then rearrange the box according the direction. We will discuss this more on the next section.
Base Stars is also known as the Period Plate. By knowing the Base Star number, you can -then- fly the Base Stars chart of the property. We always fly and complete the Base Star chart first before determine Facing and Sitting stars.
Facing Stars always located on the right side of each box. Facing Stars govern wealth aspects and career. Facing Stars are Yang in nature, therefore can be activated by movement and water.
Sitting Stars always located on the left side of each box. Siting Stars govern health aspects and relationship matter. Sitting Stars are Yin in nature, therefore they are activated by features such as mountains, hills or situation of inactivity.
Activation is a term often used by practitioners to ‘wake up’ the stars and as a way to harness the energy of the stars.
After knowing all of the ingredients needed for plotting a chart, now we have come to the most exciting part. We are going to actually plot a Flying Star Chart together now. Are you ready?
6. Plot Flying Star Chart!
Let’s take an examples to do it. As we all know, practice makes better.
I manage to find a beautiful house complete with the house plan acting as our example. Clearly we can see that this is the front portion of the house and the main door also located on the front portion. Let just say this property is facing NE2–42'.
Before checking the plan, we already prepare our notes beforehand that any direction in sector 2 mean (-, +, +). Odd number are flying Yin and Even number are flying Yang. So far, so good? Great! Let’s continue.
Pick a periode. How about period 7, sounds good? Yup. Now before even checking the house plan, let’s prepare our Period 7 Base Star chart. First, put number #7 in the centre box. Then, fly the star according to the Luo Shu Path. It should look like this.
A quick reminder of the Luo Shu Path. Start from the CENTRE — NW — W — NE — S — N — SW — E — SE.
Flying the Facing Star and the Sitting Star
The house facing NE2–42'. Again, for the sector 2 and 3, the formula is (-)(+)(+). Odd numbers flying Yin, Even number flying Yang.
Firstly, we are going to determine the Facing and Sitting Star. We start from the middle box, the one with number #7. The house facing NE and in the NE box there’s number #1. The house sitting on the SW and number #4 is in it. Therefore, for the Facing Star we write #1 and the Sitting Star we write #4. It looks like this.
Facing Star. Number #1 is Odd number, hence the star flying Yin. Still following the Luo Shu Path, move the number in the decreasing manner. So, 1–9–8–7–6–5–4–3–2. Now the chart should look like this.
Sitting stars. Again, we start from the middle box. Number #4 is Even number, hence the star flying Yang which means the number is moving forward. So, 4–5–6–7–8–9–1–2–3.
Now you have completed the whole Flying Star chart for this house. All left to do is to put each stars properly into their own location. Let’s check the plan.
Square off the plan and divide it roughly into 9 grid, same as the Luo Shu box. Name each box according their direction. Then position each stars that we have plotted into each of the accordance box.
Put the Facing Stars and Sitting Stars into the accordance box.
Finish.
There you have it! Pat yourself in the back for the good work. Couple times of practice sessions will make you more fluent in plotting a property’s Flying Star chart.
Having a nice apps to help you plot is great. It saves time and effort. But you know what, there might be times when you need to plot Flying Star chart and so happen the apps simply will not work. You will thank yourself that time. Besides, it looks cool if you can plot the chart by yourself while explaining them to some fellow friends.
